Site Context The selected site provided a perfect variety of surrounding buildings to conduct the study, as it mixes different environmental scenarios that allow for an in-depth analysis. Currently, the area is occupied by the Valkyrias Basketball Team surface parking lot. Comparison Keeping the site location constant, I evaluated the following options: An L-Shape building. Two separate blocks on a podium. A single central tower on a podium. I compared these alternatives across several environmental criteria, focusing mainly on sun hours, microclimate, and acoustic impact to determine which shape protected the building best. Results Initially, my instinct led me to believe that Proposal 3 (the central tower) would be the best option because of how simple and clean the massing looked. However, the data proved me wrong. Proposal 1 (The L-Shape) is actually the clear winner. By using its own geometry as a natural barrier, it keeps 63% of its facades in a low-noise zone. This will save the developer significant money by avoiding premium acoustic windows for the residential units. Furthermore, it guarantees 72% direct sun exposure at ground level during winter, ensuring a warm and inviting space for retail customers year-round. In contrast to my initial thought, Proposal 3 casts long shadows that drop winter sun exposure on the ground to a poor 44%, creating a cold commercial area that fails to activate the street. Finally, Proposal 2 (Two Blocks) performs the worst because it exposes 45% of the ground to severe noise (>65 dB) and channels the wind, which would force the client to invest heavily in architectural mitigations. Therefore, the L-Shape massing provides the best street activation and the most cost-effective passive performance.
